Don Graham
The Washington Post
Main Idea: warren buffett began buying stock in The Washington Post Company in 1973, and became a member of the company's board of directors in the fall of 1974. Berkshire now owns around 10 percent of the company, and Warren Buffett continues to serve asa close adviser to Don Graham, CEO of The Washingto Post Company. berkshire paid $10.6 million($6.14 a share) for its Washington Post stock in 1973.Those shares are today worth more than $ 1 billion and generate about $9 million per year in annual dividends.
Don Graham's key business principles:
***Monitor your costs
Be willing to pay for quality when the situation demands it, but spend as little as possible on te extra expenses that do not contribute to revenues.
***Let your managers do their jobs
Don't interfere with what they want to do unless it is absolutely necessary. Let the managers act on their own initiative and best judgement. With any luck, you may be surprised by how well a smart manager will do.
***Develop the skills of your employees
Let people grow with the company. Promote from within religiously. Act as a mentor to new employees, allowing them to develop a long-term view of their future with the company. That way, there will be a steady stream of new talent coming through.
***Strive for diversity in your hiring choices
If you hire and then promote women and minorities, you'll have a much more balanced workplace. In addition, you'll also be doing something that contributes to the general quality of your local community. Other businesses will ultimately notice and follow your lead as you do this.
" We really do not think much about the short-term. We do not focus on quarterly results. That is not to say we are not focused on running the business profitably and successfully. We have notably tough graders on our board. What we're focused on in the long term in building the value of our business. And that can only be measured by net income."
