法兰克.隆尼

布朗鞋业

要点:布朗鞋业是美国首屈一指的钢头安全工作靴、马靴以及休闲鞋制造商。该公司是在1883年由亨利.布朗创立,后来在1927年卖给女婿蕾.海弗南。1980年代末期,海弗南同样钦点女婿法兰克.隆尼接掌执行长。1990年,巴菲特用2亿美元收购该公司。

“不要为了模仿竞争对手去做不切实际的事情。”

隆尼的经营原则:

一、尽可能让经营管理单纯化

目前经营企业也许不容易,但是未来绝对会更加困难,因此必须把心力放在最根本的事情上。不要为了模仿竞争对手分心去做不切实际的事情,反倒应该专心想办法满足顾客,让业绩成长。坚守自己熟悉的领域,不要尝试拓展自己没有经验的业务。

二、与经理人共享公司的获利

这么做能够让经理人把自己当作企业主,而不只是当个经理人。重点是,找来希望能一展长才的经理人,放手让他们发挥,并且在他们创造优异表现时,给予他们应有的奖酬。

三、勇于让经理人承担责任

不愿意授权,什么事情都想亲力亲为,是企业失败的最大原因。放手让经理人去做对企业有利的事。

四、鼓励经理人尽情挥洒

激励员工,让员工发挥所有潜能的最好方法其实很简单,就是鼓励员工尽情挥洒。只要找到最适合的员工,他们就会让业务成长,而且成长的速度,会比你一个口令一个动作要快得多。

H.H. Brown Shoe

Main Idea: H.H. Brown is American's leading manufacturer of steel-toed safety work boots as well as western and casual shoes. The company was founded in 1883 by Henry H. Brown and sold to his son in law, Ray heffernan, in 1927. Ray Heffernan did something similar when he asked his son in law, Frank Rooney, to take over as CEO of the business in the late 1980s. Warren Buffett purchased the company for $200 million in 1990.

Frank Rooney's key business principles:

***keep management as simple as possible

Business may be tough at present, but you can guarantee it will be even tougher in the future. therefore, stay focused on doing the basics well. Don't get distracted trying to do fancy things to match the competition. Instead, concentrate on creating satisfied customers and growing the business. Stick to what you know and don't try branching out into other areas you have no experience in.

***Let managers share in the company's profits

This places them in the position of acting like they were owners rather than acting like managers. The key is to bring on board managers who are looking for opportunities to bet on their own abilities---and then standing back and letting them reap the commensurate level of rewards whenever they do something that's impressive.

***Never be afraid to delegate responsibility to managers

Not delegating and attempting to do everything yourself is the greatest cause of business failure. Let others do what's right for the business.

***Encourage managers to have fun

The best way to motivate people and get them working to their maximum potential is deceptive simple---encourage them to have fun. If they are the right people, they'll grow the business while doing that far quicker than if they were directed in minute detail.
