常常發現power supply的製造商被要求產品要符合LPS (Limited Power Source,限功率源),這究竟是為什麼呢?原來,在安規標準IEC 60950裡有要求資訊產品必須提供防火外殼。但是,當一個資訊產品的電源是由限功率電源(LPS)來供電時,若電子零件是安插在防火等級V-1以上的PCB時,則該產品可以不必提供防火外殼(fire enclosure),也就是可以使用HB燃燒等級的外殼材質。
HB等級的外殼材質,除了價格低外,還具備較佳的物理特性,也同時容易符合環保的要求。所以,Buyer都盡可能在防火以外,同時符合以上的要求。
Power supply要達到LPS的要求,可以有兩種方式,一為inherently limited power source (固有型限功率源),另一為non-inherently limited power source (非固有型限功率源),其要求詳見IEC60950標準中。簡而言之,若要符合LPS的要求,屬於固有型限功率源的power supply,其輸出不得大於8A / 100 VA;若屬於非固有型限功率源,其限電流保護裝置 (fuse) 應小於5 A。
那是否power supply不符合LPS,就無法得到安規認證呢?那倒不是,用在較大功率需求的產品上時,power supply當然要大瓦特數的才夠,大瓦數的power supply 一樣能得到安規的認證,只是end-product需要提供防火外殼罷了!
INHERENTLY LIMITED SUPPLY SOURCE - A transformer, power supply or battery having no discrete protective device that is relied upon to limit the output energy available from the supply. A power supply or battery with internal current and energy limiting circuitry shown to be reliable is eligible to be identified as inherently limited. Transformers, power supplies and batteries may be provided with protective devices as long as they are not relied upon to limit the output.
NON-INHERENTLY LIMITED SUPPLY SOURCE - A transformer, power supply or battery having a discrete protective device that automatically interrupts the output when the current and energy output reaches a prescribed limit.
