Legendary Argentina striker Gabriel Batistuta has announced his retirement from the game.

The 36-year-old, who is his country's record goalscorer with 56 goals in 78 internationals, informed Argentinian television station Canal 7 of his decision on Sunday.

"I announce my retirement from professional football and I thank all those who helped me to have such a splendid career," read a brief statement from Batistuta.

Batistuta began his career in 1988 with Newell's Old Boys where he spent only one year before moving to South American giants River Plate. He then moved onto Boca Juniors 12 months later before switching to Italian side Fiorentina in 1991.
